Food as Prevention for Cancer - Saturday May 4, 2pm

Cancer is the number one cause of death in our country affecting nearly 1 in 2 Canadians and causing death in about 1 in 4. About half of cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the public. This talk will address the following: 1) The overall effect of lifestyle, diet, and other factors (eg obesity) on observed rates of cancer, 2) The specific effects on cancer incidence of specific foods such as meat, and vegetables, 3) The dose of specific foods (eg vegetables) and rates of cancer, 4) The effect of diet on specific cancers (eg breast), 5) The timeline for the protective effect of diet on breast cancer, 6) The effect of lifestyle in randomized controlled trials of cancer patients, 7) The role of specific foods in specific cancers, 8) The potential role of other dietary factors (eg organic foods, processed foods) in cancer.

Dr Subhas Ganguli is an Associate Professor in Gastroenterology at McMaster University and is based at St Joseph’s Hospital. After obtaining his MD at the University of Saskatchewan he did training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. He then completed further training in Gastroenterology and obtained a Masters Degree in Health Research Methodology at McMaster.

His interest in the topic of ‘Food as Medicine’ started five years ago after he learned that he was pre-diabetic and has led to the development of an evidence-based website ( www.FoodasPrevention.com ) as well as presentations at Medical Grand Rounds at St Joseph’s Hospital and Gastroenterology and Cardiology Rounds at McMaster University as well as International CME presentations.
